Specializing in rodent surgery and preclinical in vivo research, I offer on-site training and services to clients in both academia and industry. With a broad scientific profile and extensive experience in design and execution of preclinical in vivo studies, I can help with (almost) all aspects of your project.
As a highly skilled research scientist, I have built a strong network of partners and collaborators and I work closely with leading manufacturers and vendors of state-of-the-art equipment for rodent surgery and in vivo experimental systems, particularly within continuous home cage monitoring and solutions for freely moving vascular access and infusion/sampling models.
So, do you wish to establish a new surgical facility, improve your aseptic setup and workflow, or need someone to perform surgeries on your animals or train your staff to do it? Or do you need help with choosing or developing an in vivo model, implement new experimental technologies, or develop new analysis metrics from your continuous in vivo data?
Whatever your needs, I'm here to help you realize your research goals.
I am based in Copenhagen, Denmark, but I am available to work with clients anywhere in the world.
Are you looking for a surgeon-for-hire? Training courses for your staff? Building a new surgical suite from scratch, or improving your current surgical setup?
With more than 12 years of microsurgical experience, and 8 years as a surgical instructor, chances are that I've got you covered.
I can help you set up chronic infusions and blood sampling in freely moving animals, continuous home cage monitoring, telemetry, indirect calorimertry, tracer models, and many other techniques.
And if one technology is not enough, I also have plenty of experience with integration of multiple systems in one experimental setup so the main challenge becomes the handling and interpretation of the data.
But don't worry - I have lots of experience with develpment of novel metrics and data analysis tools for continuous physiological data too.
My name is Thomas Svava Nielsen, PhD, and I'm the founder of this innovative company dedicated to advancing reproducibility and translatability in studies on animal models.
With a passion for experimental refinement and technological innovation, I strive to deliver high-quality, actionable data for in vivo preclinical research.
I hold a Master's degree in chemistry and molecular biology and a PhD in clinical and preclinical metabolic research from Aarhus University Hospital, where I investigated the physiology of human adipose tissue in the context of obesity and diabetes.
Subsequently, I served for over 12 years as Senior In Vivo Scientist at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) at the University of Copenhagen. This foundational work has shaped my career, allowing me to specialize in advanced microsurgical models and continuous home cage monitoring technologies for rodent studies.
At CBMR, I led the establishment of a rodent metabolic phenotyping core, optimizing numerous experimental models and upscaling experimental animal facilities with state-of-the-art surgical facilities and cutting-edge technologies.
Since 2016 I've also been a Senior Instructor at the René Remie Surgical Skills Centre in Almere, Netherlands, where I've taught advanced rodent surgical techniques, and gold-standard metabolic phenotyping using the glucose clamp technique. Through on-site training and the RRSSC courses, I have trained researchers from over 30 prestigious private and academic institutions across Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
